A note from Marisa Leaf, Hubbub Founder
To all our customers,
It is with great sadness that on 10 th March 2017, after almost a decade, we ceased Hubbub’s home deliveries.
Last summer, we had not one but two large funding deals fall through at the eleventh hour, in the same week. We were devastated. And we came within in a whisper of closing. But, despite the odds being very obviously against us given the conventional wisdom that it takes tens if not hundreds of millions of pounds to succeed in the grocery delivery space, we managed to restructure the business. We raised a much smaller sum from my family, my business partner William, other members of staff, some of the original angel investors who first backed us in 2008, plus a few others, all of whom had such belief in the Hubbub vision and model that they were prepared to risk the long odds. We said heart-breaking goodbyes to almost all our close-knit team and many of our well-loved partner shops. We made a number of operational changes to cut costs and boost efficiencies too. Our customers stuck with us. And our shops blew me away with their response. Many had stood in our shoes at one time or another - and survived. We were not only overwhelmed by their empathy, we were inspired by their resilience.
But six months later our home delivery service reached the end of its road, and sadly we decided to close it. Despite believing ours is the most profitable model of its type, ultimately we simply couldn’t grow big enough fast enough to be sustainable. Thank you for all of your support, for your orders, for the feedback that so often made our day – and for giving us a chance to change the world. We are very proud of what, together with our shops and customers, we built. Hubbub has made a difference, and been a force for social good, helping shops across London stand taller and stand together against the supermarkets.
In our absence, I urge you to visit the shops in person whenever you can, and use Market Porter when you can’t. And maybe, hopefully, one day someone will succeed where we could not.
